Hilarious Video

My good friend Andrew Barnes sent me a link to this video, which is one of the funniest things I’ve seen in a long time. It feels like it was made by an FV proponent. But treat yourself to a good laugh. After all, one who can laugh at himself will never lack for a source of amusement…

UPDATE: the video has been removed by its maker.

Ha! Presbyterian Nazis! I knew it!

So this is what really goes on in the TR closed room meetings, huh? Those of us in the wishy-washy-mushy middle never get invited to these things. I can see why. Even we cwaga guys can’t get along with Hitler!

I suggest that in the director’s cut of the vid there should be an intinction discussion right after the guy brings up Krispy Kreme donuts. “Mmmmmmm, intinction.”

Hilarious video! Somebody definitely has too much time on their hands.

In the OPC, we don’t allow those funny-looking mustaches…

Removed by the user. Did anyone copy it?

Sorry, I had to remove it. I got some nasty grams for people who didn’t think it was funny. A friend of mine made it. He’s not really pro-FV, just kind of tired of all the squabbling, I think. For the record, it wasn’t meant to slam anyone. It was more a humorous depiction of general dynamics in the PCA these days. I very much appreciate Lane’s understanding it was only meant to be funny. Sorry to those it offended. I fear we take ourselves too seriously at times.

I watched the video this morning, not knowing that it would be removed by now. I just returned to my home computer from my final job-related conference before retirement, so please make due allowances for my cranky mood. (Those of you who know me, please hold the “How could we tell?”)

By this time, perhaps most who read the comments in this thread will not have seen the video. I’ll try to keep my remarks as general as possible.

Permit me, as sort of a born contrarian, to register a negative response – and a big one, too.

The scene used for the PCA-General Assembly captions was from the chilling German film “Downfall” from a few years back. (By the way, this wasn’t the first time this scene has been used for a spoof. You can probably easily find other versions.) “Downfall” is about the final days in Hitler’s bunker in Berlin during April and May 1945. Those who know the film, and who remember the scene when Frau Goebbels murders her six young children rather than raise them in a world without Nazism, may find it hard to laugh at any segment from the movie, in any context.

I enjoy a good laugh as much as the next guy. My taste in comedy covers the board, from the inspired lunacy of Fawlty Towers to the dry, subtle, cerebral hilarity of Bob and Ray. (If you don’t know Bob and Ray, shame, shame, shame on you!) I find it impossible to laugh, however, where God’s truth is concerned. I know that the video was mainly poking fun at personalities, church factions, and ecclesiastical maneuvers. Personally, though, I can’t separate our human follies (which are pretty ridiculous at times) from the underlying doctrinal issues. If you believe that the purity of the Gospel really is at stake in some of these disputes, is light humor – not to speak of mockery – really appropriate? My opinion only. Just something to think about.

As a royal personage might say, “We were not, and are not, amused.”

I was going to write a long, contrarian view, then decided not to when the video was removed. But reading Frank’s post I have to chime in and agree.

I’ll laugh at just about anything, especially myself, but in addition to Frank’s concerns above, it bothers me that confessional folks are implicitly being linked to Nazis on the losing side of history. Folks, if that is what they think of us then it is nothing to laugh about.

Richard, that’s right. In the OPC we prefer that you be either hot or cold… full beard or clean shaven!

Frank and Martin, I greatly respect and appreciate your views on the subject. I found it funny mostly because the level of emotion I feel parallels what Hitler seemed to be feeling (though in other ways not parallel at all).

Martin, by this point, I don’t much care what the world out there thinks of us confessional types. They think of us as Nazis. Period. They don’t need a video to confirm them in that already well-established opinion.

Incidentally, I would probably have found it a lot less funny if it had been mocking the cwaga folks.

Frank: You “had” to remove it because some people found it unfunny? The tyranny of the minority strikes again…

I noted your typo in #12. That was Tony in #6 who took it down. I expressed my opinion, but would never have asked the owner to remove it.

Frank: Oops, my apologies! See? Even *I’m* not perfect! Heh, heh…
