It is always instructive to see how preachers in the past have sought to serve the Lord by preaching. The definitive history of preaching has now been written. It is in six volumes (volume 1, volume 2, volume 3, volume 4, volume 5, volume 6).

Thanks for the link, Lane. Great find! I’ve really been searching for something on just this topic. Thanks for all of the other recent book “plugs” as well. Keep ’em coming. They’re most helpful.

Wow, I know Old wrote massive volumes on worship, but now preaching! My goodness, so tempting to buy them all.

You’re welcome. Old is probably the foremost expert on worship and the history of worship, both preaching and sacraments. Now if he can only last long enough to write on the Lord’s Supper…

Can this be purchased as a set somewhere?

I’m sure you know this already, but volume 7 is already finished and ready to be published. Dr. Old told me that he was most excited about this one since it dealt with the resurgence of expository biblical preaching in the 20th Century.

Old does a really good job, and his writing style is excellent. As for past writers, I always though Dargan’s two volumes were a pretty good read.
