The Expositor’s Bible Commentary Revised

David Garland and Tremper Longman are in charge of the revision of the EBC. Some of the contributors of the old series were asked to update their commentaries (Van Gemeren on the Psalm, for instance, a great boon to pastors). Others are brand new contributions. So far available at WTS are volumes 1 (Gen-Lev), 6 (Prov-Is), 10 (Luke-Acts), 12 (Eph-Phm), and 13 (Heb-Rev).

In 2003, I was fortunate enough to find a complete set (3 volumes) of Alexander Maclaren’s commentary on the Psalms in the original Expositor’s Bible Commentary (published in 1893-1894). It’s still considered to be a valuable set today. Maclaren (1826-1910) was an excellent expositor and, of course, his applications come straight out of his (by 1894) 48 years of pastoral experience.

Lane, why do you believe Van Gemeren’s commentary would be ” a great boon
    to pastors”?
