Jackie Evancho and Singing

This is a 10-year old girl with a rather amazing voice. It reminds me a lot of how Charlotte Church used to sing. But I can tell even now that she has some vocal problems. Her voice is way too heavy for someone that age. And singing “O Mio Babbino Caro” at age 10 is not what I would recommend either. She needs to slow down. She definitely has the raw materials to be a good opera singer, maybe even great, but she needs to go quite a bit slower than what she’s doing right now. She needs to concentrate on a natural unforced sound production, and she needs to sing a very light and carefully guarded repertoire. The twenty-four Italian songs and arias would be a good place to start, as well as some of the lighter Mozart songs. Folk songs would also be very good for her. But if they try to push her into operatic roles that are too heavy for her, then she will go the same way as Charlotte Church, with a ruined voice. It will be to kill the goose that laid the golden egg. That would be too bad, since she has so much enthusiasm, and she can very much engage the audience.

I agree with you. She is such a sweet, and very poised girl. To ruin her future now for the sake of getting ahead, would be a huge pity for a child prodigy. I also hope she does not win the contest since it would be a pity to send her to the wolves of Las Vegas at that age. Too much before her time and it would destroy her innocence. I’m putting my vote on Gravity! Unique and entertaining!

Also, I think her vibrato is artificially produced (by the rapid up-and-down movement of her lower jaw). As she gets older, though, her vibrato should develop naturally. I agree with you. She needs to be carefully protected and trained.

Well, ahem, she is after all only 10 years old. She will undoubtedly take voice lessons and practice, practice, practice in the next few years. But for a 10 year old she has a spectacular voice. All she needs now is polish, which will come in time.

I also agree David, that those Gravity guys were terrific….

BTW, I meant to ask, how did Charlotte Church ruin her voice? I thought it was just she turned to pop singing.

No, Charlotte Church ruined her voice by singing Carmen when she was only 16 years old. If you sing something too heavy for the voice, the vocal cords will develop vocal nodes (basically blisters on the vocal cords), thus rendering the singer voiceless. My point is that Jackie is already on the road towards singing stuff that is too heavy. A female voice matures around age 25, and even then, some of the really heavy stuff like Wagner shouldn’t be attempted until at least 30, when the voice has been well-trained, and has the endurance for it. Jackie is pressing on her voice to make it sound older than it is, and this is NOT HEALTHY.

Lane: as the father of a female university voice student, I’ll just add a second (or third or whatever) to your analysis. The girl and her parents are not getting — or perhaps we should say, taking — good counsel.
